Reputations and Misconceptions

“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it.” — Warren Buffett

How many of us have experienced this in some way, shape, or form?  For everyone, having a good, solid reputation is a major key to success.  For business owners and community leaders, it is integral.

A recent speech at the BYU Management Society breakfast meeting about maintaining your integrity gave me reason to think about the reputations we craft for ourselves, and misconceptions that can damage that reputation.  Today, I’ll put myself on the line and talk about how a misconception affects me and my business.

As many of you know, I wrote the songs for a couple of albums and they each qualified for Grammy nominations — 17 total.  For many people, when they hear that I qualified for 17 Grammy noms, they assume that I am a Grammy Nominee.  However, technically, that is incorrect.  I am a Grammy Qualifier, which means I made it into the first of 3 rounds.  Those that make the top 5 of the second round are officially known as Grammy Nominees. The winners of the third round, those that you see at the Grammy awards on television, are known as Grammy Winners and they get to take home that iconic trophy.

Regardless of how many times I try to clearly explain that I made it into the first round with each album and I am only a Grammy Qualifier, people often take the shortcut and just say I’m a Grammy Nominee.  They don’t do it out of malice, but because the Grammy voting process is mostly a mystery to the general public, many people feel it’s just easier to say that I received 17 Grammy nominations.

Why do I care about this misconception?  Well, if an attorney representing the Grammys thinks I am making false claims, I could get into trouble because the attorney’s job is to protect the Grammy brand.  I’m a business woman, and I understand the concept of protecting your brand.  If I look like I’m making up stuff about being a Grammy Nominee, or even a Grammy finalist, the misconception could damage my reputation and become a major liability.  Even though I have made very little money off of my music career, this misconception could potentially lead me to financial ruin.

Okay, so I’m only a Grammy Qualifier, but many would agree with me that it’s still a big deal and an honor.  Because I have many years of sales and marketing, I believe that experience was what helped me get my music heard around the world, including India and China.  This accomplishment, regardless of my Grammy Qualifier status, has given me tremendous credibility as an online marketer, and that naturally lends itself to the name of my marketing business, Rock Star Marketing.

Have I intentionally made false claims?  No.

Are there misconceptions about my accomplishments?  Yes.

What does that do to my reputation?  Well, for some, it shows that as an online marketer, I know what I’m doing and I’m doing it well.  For others who think that I’ve played into the hype, I would agree.  After all, I am a marketer, and aren’t marketers responsible for getting people excited about the products they’re selling?  You betcha!

Okay, so that’s today’s confessional about my reputation and misconceptions. I’ll say my Hail Marys and hopefully be done with it.  For public record, I want to make everyone aware that I am only but a humble “Grammy Qualifier”.  I did not appear on television at the Grammys, and I did not win an award, but I made 2 quality albums and did a pretty darned good job of doing the online marketing all by myself with my own money and tenacity.

Now, I’ll ask you.  What could be a misconception about your business that could harm your reputation?

  • Do you have poor reviews on Yelp or Google from a couple of years ago that have hurt your business, even though you have worked through those issues?
  • Do you have a former client, partner, or employee that has publicly shared stories about you when you lost your temper or cheated someone?
  • Are you feeling guilty because you bent your otherwise “straight as an arrow” code of ethics?

If you have misconceptions that negatively affect your reputation, what should you do? For me, I choose to live a life free of regrets.  If I know I have done something wrong, I apologize immediately.  If I find out that my actions negatively produced shock waves without my knowing it at the time, I accept responsibility for my errors and I make amends.

After all is said and done, if you live with high integrity, misconceptions will not damage your reputation. If you did fall out of integrity, but apologize and make up for the mistakes you’ve made, in time your reputation will eventually heal itself.  Your reputation will always be safe if you do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reasons.

Giving Thanks this Thanksgiving Holiday, 2011

2011 has been a great year of growth, and it’s almost over. I’ve had so much awesome stuff come my way this year and I thought I’d share it with my fans and friends.

1. I have become friends with the amazing South African singer/songwriter, Cofield Mundi, and I will be helping her with her 2012 tour. Cofield Mundi is as big in South Africa as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, so check her out. She’s a great lady, a very prolific songwriter, and has done a terrific job of getting her music heard around the world. Check her out at CofieldMundi.com.

2. Even though I’ve chosen to focus on my marketing over my music, the Universe simply won’t let me.  I was recently approached by singer Martin Wong of San Francisco, to record an English song for the Chinese market in time for Chinese New Year 2012.  We just did the recording and it’s amazing!  Stay tuned for more good news about the song’s release in China.

3.  My marketing business, Rock Star Marketing, now has 3 divisions:

  • Online Marketing
  • Telemarketing
  • Brand and Booking Management

Now I’ll be fully equipped to launch terrific marketing campaigns for fellow musicians, including some local talent like Tammi Brown, Sonny Blue Bland, and Minor Williams.  Check out these talented Gospel and Blues musicians the next time you want to groove out.

So, that’s what I’ve been up to musically.  I’ve been busy with other stuff, too, like my expanding West Coast Swing dance business and my new real estate investment business.  Life is great and I’m glad for the support you’ve been giving me over the years.  It’s so awesome having a cheering section and I give thanks to you and your support on this Thanksgiving weekend.

Cheers!

Love,

Jen

My Music Giveaway

During recent storms, a leak in my roof created a small flood in my garage, and 100 of my newest CDs were damaged from exposure to the water.  Fortunately, my renter’s insurance covered the loss (albiet a small stipend), and I can rest easy knowing that the insurance gods provided me enough coverage to equal the amount I’d have to pay in sales taxes anyway.  Kind of an odd catalyst, but this little event is leading to an idea I had this morning.

The music industry is changing due to the ability to purchase songs in MP3 files online.  Thankfully, iTunes and similar online retailers are allowing people greater access to individual songs, but with the advent of this awesome technology, albums and compact discs are becoming dinosaurs.

So, when the life span of CDs is short lived, at best, what does a Grammy-nominated artist do with the 800 CDs sitting in her garage?  Answer:  Give them away!

So, here’s my offer.  If you want 1 CD or 100 CDs or whatever amount you’d like to have, all you have to do is email me at jennifer@rock-star-mktg.com and I’ll give them to you for free.  Seriously.

Got a fundraiser?  Ask for a number of my CDs and you can have them to help raise money for your cause.

Want to give the gift of music to your friends, family, coworkers, or random strangers?  Send me an email with your request and they’re yours.

Want some of my music for whatever reason?  Just ask, and you shall receive.

Why am I doing this giveaway if I’ve invested all my time and lots of money into creating my music?  Well, first I realize that the shelf life of my music in CD format is pretty much over.  Secondly, I’d like to reclaim some of the space in my garage.  Thirdly, I truly believe that sharing is caring and if I can sing to you through your car’s speakers as you drive down the highway, it would be my honor to spend that time with you.  (The good news about that is that I’m with you in spirit and you really won’t be hauling the real me around with you as you go on your errands.)

Seriously, take me up on my offer.  First come, first served.  There is no time limit on this offer, but my garage would appreciate it if you acted upon it sooner than later.  Just send me an email at jennifer@rock-star-mktg.com and let me know how many CDs you’d like.  I won’t pay for shipping, but I will be happy to meet with you personally and hand them to you…provided you are near Monterey, California.  It’ll cost you a hug and a smile.  If you want me to ship it to you, you’ll have to pay for that.

I look forward to hearing from you!

With love,

Jennifer

I’m baaaaack!

Well, my sabbatical didn’t take long.  LOL!  It looks like my fans don’t want me to be a music industry drop out!  I’m honored, truly.

I’ve been invited to perform at the following benefit concert:

Location: Monterey Peninsula SDA Church
Time: 11:00AM Saturday, February 12th

If you’re visiting Seaside this Saturday and feel like sharing some love with this Peninsula Adventist School benefit, we’d love to have you join us.  I’ll be only one of the many talented musicians and singers performing at this benefit concert.

See you there!  Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Is This Good-bye? Nah!

2010 was a terrific year!  Now that we’ve entered 2011, I’ve had a long talk with myself and have come to a few conclusions:

1.  I love my music and I love marketing, but music is my personal money pit and marketing is where I make money.  So, I’m putting my music on the backburner in 2011 until the economy improves and I’m ready to re-enter the wild world of the music industry.

2.  I’ve been blessed to accomplish so many amazing milestones since I wrote my very first song on April 20, 2006.  I’ve created 2 albums that both qualified for multiple GRAMMY nominations.  I sang backup to Bohemia on his song for the Bollywood film, Chandni Chowk to China.  I’ve performed at multiple venues and I’ve become recognized for my talent and marketing brilliance here on the Monterey Peninsula.  I’m thrilled that I’ve been able to do so much in only 4 years!

3.  I’m equally passionate about marketing and dancing, so I’ve decided to devote my attention to where the passions and profitability intersect.  My Rock Star Marketing business is thriving and I love, love, love blogging for my clients, managing their social media marketing accounts, writing website content for SEO companies and Advertising agencies, and writing marketing tips in my newspaper column in the Marina Gazette.  I’m equally passionate about West Coast Swing and I’m very proud of our growing West Coast Swing Dance Company that meets at the Carmel Woman’s Club every Wednesday in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California.

Is this good-bye to music and performing?  No.  Hardly.  It just means that I’ve stopped throwing money into my musical money pit.  Surely, in this economy, you understand my need to stop the bleeding.

My theme for 2011 is a year of growth, and I fully intend to re-enter the music industry with all rockets firing when I’m ready.  I just need a little break…then I’ll be back!

In the meantime, you can show your love and support by purchasing my music here on this website, on iTunes, and through CDBaby.

Here’s to a terrific new year of growth for all of us!

Here’s to a Year of Growth in 2011

Happy New Year, everyone!!!  Here’s saying goodbye to 2010 and ushering in a pregnant-with-possibilities 2011.

I always like to start off the year with a Dream Board.

I believe I’ve discussed Dream Boards in an earlier column, but they are a posterboard I create with pictures, words, and inspirational items I clipped out from magazines, my camera, etc.  I’ve been doing them for years and I find that all my dreams eventually come true because I put my dream board in a prominent place and see it daily.

This year, in order to spare a tree or two, I decided to make a slideshow presentation of my dream board.  It was fun and easy to make, but the only drawback is that I don’t have it tacked onto my wall.  Instead, its on my computer desktop and I click it open daily.

To inspire you with ideas for your own New Year’s resolutions, here’s what I’ve created for myself in 2011:

My Theme for 2011:  Growth!

Our love keeps growing in our marriage.

We will all grow in our dancing in our West Coast Swing Dance Company.  (By the way, we’re having so much fun dancing, I hope you’ll come and check us out!  www.wcsdanceco.com)

Earn, Baby, Earn!  Growth in business, personal wealth, savings and smarts.

Grow through mentoring by learning from others and sharing in return.

Grow my savings by 10%

Grow my Rock Star Marketing business by growing my client base, profits, experience, and grow my number of happy clients who are thrilled with my work!

Grow by performing my music and only enter into profitable artistic ventures.

Grow healthier:  Eat right, Rest, Drink Lots of Water, and Exercise Daily!

Grow my Joy Factor:  Enjoy driving my new MINI Cooper Countryman!

Grow my relationships:  Continue telling family and friends how much I love them.

**********

So, overall growth is what I have planned for 2011.  What are your resolutions?  If you’re open to sharing your hopes and dreams with me, I’d love to see them.  Feel free to contact me any time at “me (at) jenniferfilzen (dot) com”.

Have a very Happy New Year!
